friday pic: windmill

every friday i share a picture and explain how i got the shot. here is this week’s photo:

before i share how i got the shot i desire to say something controversial! you know, shake the friday pic up a little bit! so here is the ridiculous statement: real photographers don’t use instagram. haha, i can just picture some photographer saying that and not actually kidding…like i am! i use instagram all the time! and i love it. so what makes a person a real photographer? you take pictures. what makes a person a real writer? you write. what makes a person a “real” anything? you become real at something when you do it, and you do it often.

how i got the shot: so this is at fuel city, i mentioned them a few weeks ago. awesome tacos. their premises is set up very texan style, complete with real longhorns grazing the grass. and this thing, a windmill. took the picture on my iphone (and oh yeah, real photographers don’t use their iphone to take pictures either). i ran it through the ps express app and made a small adjustment to the saturation.

so happy for friday! i have a photo shoot this morning, and then i look forward to some rest this weekend!

people are willing to pay you for your creative work

my mom has been talking about going to go see the cirque du soleil tribute to michael jackson for a moment. at first it was going to be a trip to austin because there wasn’t a show planned for here in dallas, but then they added a dallas date in june. when she found out about the june date she told me and my sister about it and said she was going to purchase tickets. i didn’t consider exactly how much the show would cost. then a couple weeks later she tells me my ticket is $200. and i am like, “really?!?!”

i have never spent $200 for a one night experience. call me cheap, but i prefer thrifty. i told my mom that is my whole entertainment budget for the year, i guess it will be redbox for this chick! ;)

produce great creative work and people will be wiling to pay to experience your work. no need to discount your work, there is someone willing to pay for it. i know from personal experience, i am always amazed when people buy my books or when people pay me to take their picture. people pay for creative work all the time. when was the last time you’ve been to the movies? bought a song? a book? we shell out money all the time for creative work. why not get paid for your work?

creative work isn’t all about getting paid, but people are willing to pay you for your creative. you have put time, effort, and at times have made monetary investment into your work. your creative work is valuable.

i follow the the99percent.com and they recently had a conversation with one of cirque du soleil’s co-founder gilles ste-croix. this article and the99percent.com is worth checking out.

when you don’t want to hear romans 8:28

it’s the go to verse when letdowns and disappointments happen in life, people will quote romans 8:28 to you, “all things work together for the good of those who love the lord…” but what if you just don’t want to hear that? sometimes you don’t want to hear about the bigger picture, you are not in the mind frame to concern yourself with how things are working together for the good. you only want things to work for the here and now. and if they are not, you just want to be angry and waddle in questioning of God’s plans.

been there! so what do you do when you don’t want to hear romans 8:28? you go back a couple verses and read romans 8:26 and 27, and know that God has your back even when you are tired of it all.

Romans 8:26, 27, and 28
Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good. – The Message (MSG)

in the bible Jesus teaches us how to pray, in what is now known as the Lord’s prayer, and so i find it interesting that this scripture talks about not knowing how to pray, not knowing how to approach the throne of God when how to pray has been laid out in the four gospels. but no, you are so tired and frustrated you don’t know how to utter “Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth…” from your lips because, after all, you are not really interested in the will of God right now. you’re just upset and tired!

so while all your other friends are quoting romans 8:28 to you i will quote romans 8:26 and 27. God is with you and always willing to help you through it all. through the moments of letdowns and disappointments. he will take your wordless sighs and aching groans and make them into prayers. even in our moments of complete frustration, when we are so tired we don’t even know how to pray, he is in and for us.

2012 blogathon: cute kittens will be a last resort

last year i participated in the wordcount blogathon and it was an awesome experience. this year i am doing it again! for 31 days straight i will be blogging. i was hesitant about doing it this year because i am somewhat in a creative drought right now, i feel unfocused and completely all over the place, but this will force me to “sit & write”. sit & write. sit & write!

my heart’s desire is to speak a positive word into the lives of all those who somehow end up here! i want to inspire you to live an incredible life and to create awesome things! the world is filled with naysayers and negative messages, but i am determined to let my little light SHINE.

i am just this 30 year old who loves to write, photograph, teach, and most of all loves Jesus. and i go about my blog all the wrong way because i write about all those things…sometimes all in one post! they, the experts, say if you want a successful blog you should limit your topics. oops! but perhaps it’s not all about having a “successful blog” but simply inspiring others…

the other day a coworker sent me a picture of herself at closing of her new home and told me “thanks for the inspiration.” last year i bought a house and it inspired her to take a leap of faith. and i thought to myself, that’s what it is about! inspiring other people. even if it is just one person, and even if my delivery needs work i must keep taking leaps, believing, trusting God for his promises and writing about it all.

if you are reading this on tuesday there is still time to register for the blogathon, registration is open until 11 p.m. pacific time on may 1. i convinced my mom to sign up, she blogs at cynthiabanessa.com. go support her! i am creative because of this woman. if you are already participating would love to connect with you! leave your blog in the comment section!

i hope everyone sticks around for the whole 31 days and beyond. i promise to serve up 31 days of oh so fresh and so clean content. i promise to resort to pictures of cute kittens only if i have completely run out of real content to share. the best way to stay connected is to subscribe via email.

okay, day 1 of 31 down…
30 more to go!

i
can
so
do
this!

walk with the dreamers

“Walk with the dreamers, the believers, the courageous, the cheerful, the planners, the doers, the successful people with their heads in the clouds and their feet on the ground. Let their spirit ignite a fire within you to leave this world better than when you found it…” – Wilferd Peterson

friday pic: piggly wiggly

every friday i share a picture and explain how i got the shot. here is this week’s photo:

how i got the shot: taken on the south side of downtown dallas with my iphone. most piggly wiggly’s are long gone like this one. but imagine all the people in and out of this store…back in the day. the building was built in 1922 and located at akard & griffin. in the movie win a date with tad hamilton! three young adults who work at the local piggly wiggly lives are changed when one of them wins a date with tad hamilton. tad hamilton is the biggest star in hollywood! the choice of piggly wiggly in the movie is the perfect backdrop to convey small town charm and simplicity. win a date with tad hamilton! is one of my favorite movies. worth a watch.

excited about this weekend! going to san marcos premium outlets to shop with one of my sisters and a friend. san marcos is located in hill country here in texas. a little past austin. beautiful area. to recover from my weekend trip i took monday and tuesday off work. and then it’s countdown to the end of the school year! whoa. whoa! whoa. where did the time go?

have an awesome weekend!

3 things for earth day

1. “we do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” – native american proverb

i saw this quote the other day and thought i would make an image quote from it for earth day 2012. click on the image for the pdf of the quote.

2.
in 2010 i designed a poster for earth day that you can also download over at creative bluebird. it’s of one of my all time favorite quotes, “in the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we have been taught.” – baba dioum.

3. the hidden water we use by national geographic

love national geographic! i visit their site often at work for my students. this is an awesome look at how much water it takes to produce common items that we use everyday. for example, 1 gallon of tea requires 128 gallons of water. worth checking out.

happy earth day!

(also make sure to check out google’s doodle today)
