having purpose is all the rage. it’s everywhere! essentially it’s the message of “find your purpose and you will find happiness.” but what if you haven’t yet discovered your purpose? how do you find what all these other purpose driven people have? how do you get in on it? you see people all around you knowing their purpose or people all around you are nudging you to find your purpose and you are at square one.
my immediate response to people who are in search of their purpose is to explore. don’t be afraid to try things, and eventually you’ll discover something you are passionate about. and there you go! your purpose! but on second thought, what if all this purpose searching is overrated? what if God simply wants you to seek him, his will and not seek after your purpose?
“For in him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’” – Acts 17:28 (NIV)
in him we live! we have joy in him. we have happiness in him. the bible says to seek first the kingdom of God and all these other things will be added unto you. other things like purpose, other things like living with intent, other things like success. and all the other things you desire in your life.
become a kingdom seeker
when you seek the kingdom there is no need to wreck your brain seeking your purpose. you will discover your purpose in him. he will direct your path.
i talk about dr. king’s last speech all the time, but in his last speech in memphis he talks about how he just wants to do God’s will. early on i grabbed on to this concept and it has been my prayer over my life. what i do is less about my purpose and more about the will that God has for my life.
look what seeking God’s will did for dr. king! i think everyone will agree that he lived a very purposeful life. dr. king had intent, he had purpose. he was a world changer.
so how do you find your purpose? well, it’s a bit ironic! you stop seeking your purpose and start seeking God’s will. God’s will will become your purpose.
