all my dallas morning news columns

good morning. happy wednesday!

we are in the middle of summer! in texas that means tons of heat. my last column that ran in the dallas morning news this month is a piece about the weather called It’s hot, but go outside anyway. check it out, along with my other dmn pieces. i’ve been blessed to be part of the dallas morning news community voices for the past year. my official run with them is coming to an end, but the editor is so cool that he encourages previous community voices columnist to submit work.

it’s been a really good experience. i’ve learned a lot about myself as a writer. one of the things i’ve learned is that i am terrible with writing deadlines, but sometimes the pieces don’t fit how you want them to or things need to be reworked. for this last column i had something done for the deadline, but it wasn’t feeling right. i emailed my editor and let him know that i needed more time. the next day i sat at my computer and it came to me, the reworking of the column. after i gave it more time and reworked the piece i was okay about pressing send on it.

if you are a creative don’t completely freak out if whatever you are creating isn’t working out how you want it to, just give it some time. trust that you are a creative person, and that you will be able to create your vision…eventually. my problem is that i am somewhat of a control freak, who has time to wait for inspiration to hit? i need to be done with whatever i am working on now so i can move on to the next thing! :)

here are all of my previous dmn columns:

Confessions of a recovering news junkie
We must connect the dots between black history and today’s black youth
Innovate libraries to reflect society
Don’t underestimate 5-year-olds

building my case for an ipad / (dallas morning news column: Confessions of a recovering news junkie)

i think i could get some use out of an ipad. been using my iphone a lot to do other things beside phone calls, like blogging and reading blogs. great if the screen was bigger. sigh. things and more things! note to self: be content.

hope everyone had a good weekend. my family celebrated earth hour on saturday. we turned off everything and spent an hour outside, patio lit by candles. we grilled hotdogs that were delish! didn’t take any pictures since my camera uses energy, but i hold the moments in my memories of good times.

been trying not to live for the weekend and experience life after work during the week. the notion can get expensive, going home and watching tv for the evening is cheap! but today i ventured out to target after work to pick up lunch food for the week. target is dangerous for me, but i feel proud of myself for sticking to my budget and…

my put back item, a concept i spoke about in a previous post, was something i really wanted but told myself no and when i came home i transferred the dollar amount of the item to my savings account. made the denial of the item worth it!

had another column run in the dallas morning news yesterday called “confessions of a recovering news junkie“. i can say that i love the title since the editor came up with it! unfortunately, only online subscribers can view it online, when i pick up the actual paper i will scan and share.

for my category “fresh from facebook” i share the following:

paula white today on facebook encouraged her followers to “be proactive with every promise God has given you…”

sometimes that’s hard to do but we are required to have faith, faith that is alive! this week think about how you can become active in whatever God has promised you.

have a good tuesday!
