friday pic: main plaza

every friday i share a picture and (sometimes) explain how i got the shot. here is this week’s photo:

how i got the shot: instagram shot of the main plaza in san miguel, mexico. wasn’t really able to use instagram in san miguel since i didn’t have my cellphone data plan. in the main plaza there was free wifi.

what a week this has been. so overwhelming. the first day of school is on monday! i already know most of my kids on my roster from when i taught them in kindergarten. i am excited about being their teacher again!!!

thanks for reading.

home from mexico

i am home from mexico and i love everyone!!! my family, my friends, my neighbors, and you my dear reader! i made it back early tuesday morning.

i tried to document my trip as much as possible during my actual trip on gloriamarie.tumblr.com so i wouldn’t be like one of those students who answer with “i don’t know” when you ask them what did they do on their summer break. instead i will be one of those annoying bloggers who asks, “didn’t you read my blog?”

mexico has been a dream destination of mines since college, and not in a 7 day resort stay kind of way. i wanted to live amongst the people and hear the language and not just fellow americans who speak only english with the exception of “hola”. i lived with my spanish speaking coworkers in san miguel. they own a house in san miguel that they so graciously opened up to me.

one of the things i believe is that the universe conspires. put your desires out in the universe and expect for them to happen and they will! they may not happen when you want them to, but God has perfect timing.

all the well wishes for my trip included a warning of “be careful!” leading up to my trip i read about incidents, in particular the incident where there were decapitated bodies found alongside a mexican highway. just awful things related to the drug cartels. in the area of san miguel i felt safe.

the people of mexico are giving people. you respect them they will respect you. what they value as a country of people, family, is admirable. whereas here in america we put a lot of emphasis on prosperity.

i met some nice people. this one couple invited me to their house after only having lunch next to me, they gave me their address. we don’t do this in america!

the most challenging thing for me about spending time in mexico was eating. i probably lost 5 pounds! in mexico they eat at different times than in the US and handle their food differently. a week in i became really sick, it put me out for a couple days. then i am somewhat of a picky eater. wasn’t interested in much. the food situation was just not good for me, i felt hungry half the time! one night i had a dream i found a chipotle that was hidden! i am not even a huge fan of chipotle! right now i am craving chilis!

living without instant access to the internet was hard as well. the house where i stayed had no tv or internet. at my house i can go weeks without turning on my tv, no big deal, but the internet is a different story! on my phone i had text but no data. whenever i was in a hotspot i was able to connect through wifi, like a druggie getting a fix.

i rode a 21 hour plus bus ride to san miguel, but decided to fly back. next year i plan to visit again, but flying completely!

if you really want to know more about my trip visit my tumblr blog. it’s all there! :) really!

THANKS everyone for the well wishes and prayers, and a huge thanks to all the guest bloggers who kept my blog afloat during the month of july! really enjoyed reading and sharing what you all had to say.

hello from mexico!

hello my dear readers,

hope you all have been enjoying the guest bloggers so far! more to come! i am still in mexico and will be here until the 30th! i’ve been updating my tumblr with some recaps and photos. internet for me is not that all convenient here in san miguel. thank God for starbucks and the public library for having hotspots.

have an awesome weekend!

and if you get the chance to travel go. go. go!

my friends are epic

i am über excited to share all the upcoming guest blogs in the next few weeks! my friends are epic! i asked and they responded. i have never had guest bloggers before so it’s interesting to let go, but it just goes along with how my blog is growing into something beyond me. you guys will be truly blessed with what’s coming your way. fresh perspectives!

also coming up in the next week or so is my 1,000th published post here on gloriamarie.com! look out for that. since i am using the word epic, i think it’s fair to say that is pretty epic! eh?

IF SO HAPPEN you desire to keep up with my mexico adventures you can check out http://gloriamarie.tumblr.com/. my tumblr blog is my blog without purpose and intent! ;) i will update it as much as possible.

delayed but not denied

my trip to mexico has been delayed. the guy’s father of the couple i am going with died. we changed our tickets from this friday to next tuesday. please pray for them.

my trip being delayed got me thinking about how in life things don’t always happen when we expect or plan for them to happen, but that doesn’t mean they won’t. in a world of now it is hard to wait things out. in my case i know the new date of when my trip will happen, so it’s easy to wait it out. but unfortunately, life doesn’t always work like that. we don’t always know when things will come to fruition. and that’s when doubt sets in. at that moment you simply have to believe that God has perfect timing and his word is true. it has to become an absolute.

so if you are believing for something to happen in your life and it is appears as if it will never happen, just consider that it only has been delayed (from your perspective) but not denied.

keep believing and doing your part…God has assigned a perfect time for it to happen.

* * *
POST UPDATE: so i thought i knew the new date of my trip! got another call from the couple i am traveling with and the guy’s mother is now in the hospital because she had a heart attack. looks like i won’t be leaving next tuesday either!

there is still time to submit a guest blog for the month of july! since my trip has been delayed i will accept submissions until next tuesday, the 3rd!

weekend trip to san antonio

this past weekend i visited san antonio for the 3rd time. for one of those times i don’t remember who i went with but i do remember eating an awesome taco salad at a restaurant off the river walk. i remember good mexican food if nothing else! during this visit i went to sea world with my family. i was disappointed because i was expecting to see more sea life. i did see shamu!

i walked around the river walk and downtown area and instagrammed it up! here are some of the pictures.

our road trip to san antonio was interesting. after we passed austin we decided that we should put our first destination of sea world in the gps. somehow the avoid highway setting was on, and we found ourselves deep in hill country. i have lived in austin, but i had never gone deep into hill country. it was gorgeous but we really just wanted to get to our destination.

it was a good weekend!

friday pic: grab a map and go (in my head i am this nomad gypsy chick…)

every friday i share a picture and explain how i got the shot. here is this week’s photo.

how i got the shot: everyday on the way home from work i pass up an RV park off interstate 20, where people hook up their RVs for a night or two. sometimes i’m like, “i want to live in a RV and travel around to random places to see the world’s biggest…wheel” or some other world’s biggest thing. everyday i pass the RV park up and drive on to one of those developments outside of the city, you know the ones that look like a giant grid if you view it from google earth. in my head i am this nomad gypsy chick floating around with the tumbleweeds, but in reality i have put down roots in the grid. i snapped this picture at my local walmart because it gives me motivation to work towards the best of both worlds, a home but with the freedom to grab a map and go anytime to anywhere.

i ran the picture through instagram.

happy friday folks!

friday pic: crafter (and my love for hello kitty)

hard to believe it’s been almost a week since i’ve been back from the cruise! still haven’t uploaded a batch of pictures anywhere, i guess i will eventually upload some…when no one even gives a hoot about them anymore! ;)

this week’s picture is from my trip to the bahamas, an older lady crafting a product to sale in a street market.

how i got the shot: this is from my iphone. i absolutely loved taking pictures with my iphone while on vacation, very quick to capture shots. snap! snap! bam! done! this lady DID NOT give me a nice look after she noticed i took her picture. but there is a saying in photography that says it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. in multiple places in the bahamas merchants had bags/baskets that they weaved designs onto, you could ask for something custom or just buy what they already had made. at some locations i saw hello kitty weaved onto the bags/baskets, and i love me some hello kitty, but one merchant needed a new pattern. their hello kitty was quite scary looking, i wanted to call sanrio (the makers of hello kitty) and let them know about the atrocity of hello kitty going on down in the bahamas. as a fan i feel i must protect the integrity of hello kitty.

it’s my 30th birthday weekend!
woohoo!

i have been challenged by career coach tory johnson to do a teleconference so i will do one soon. i am aiming for mid september.
i challenge my readers this weekend to make a list of 5 things you are thankful for, and thank God for them!

back (sunset)

i am back from my 7 day cruise. the last night on the ship i witnessed the most amazing sunset! all week i had been going up to the top deck of the boat to try to capture a sunset, either it was cloudy or i was too late. on saturday night it was perfect.

i didn’t bring my professional camera, so i shot this with my point and shoot. i didn’t want to be hauling a heavy expensive camera around so i didn’t bring a dslr. as someone who loves taking pictures and someone who also wants to live in the moment i was a little torn between snapping and just enjoying the sunset. i wanted to catch some sunrises but most mornings it was really hard to rise myself.

the only thing i did in post was increase the saturation a tiny and reduced some noise.

more pictures coming later this week.

weekend trip to memphis

via weheartit.com

my parents are from memphis. this weekend i am going to a family reunion. a short trip to memphis. while looking for hotels room a reviewer of a hotel made the comment that memphis is a dump and that we should sell it to china. that really made me laugh. memphis isn’t a dump, it’s just doesn’t have many new and shiny areas. whenever i go to memphis i think about the “walking in memphis” song by marc cohn. i should have a good time, though.

in love with friday

and perhaps a little bit too much.

haven’t really blogged in a while besides from posting some quotes. and speaking of quotes, i am working on a lulu.com quote book. it’s going to be rad because i’ve been collecting quotes for over a decade and to have them nicely packaged will be awesome. the project is going a little slow but i will get there!

last week i was in atlanta for a teacher workshop. and i got to see the ebenezer baptish church, dr. king was the co-pastor, a very historical site. to stand in front of the church and take this picture was pretty cool. i am a huge dr. king fan.

i’ve been keeping myself way too busy, though. i have projects here and there that i need to free myself up from. i am not centered…at all.

states i've been to so far this year

missouri
tennessee
arkansas
louisiana
oklahoma

texas is still
the best!
